United Way Announces Funding Opportunity for Increasing Access to Affordable Rental Housing

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – August 29, 2006 – United Way of Eastern Fairfield County is pleased to announce that $75,000 is available for investment in projects that support its goal to increase access to affordable rental housing for families and individuals, including those with special needs and disabilities. Requests for funding of up to $75,000 will be considered to support projects in the following towns: Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. The grant period is 12 months from time of award, which is anticipated to be December 2006. The United Way Board has a strong preference that these grants support the goals and perspective of the Greater Bridgeport Area’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. The 10-Year Plan is available on the United Way website at http://www.thewaytocare.org/pdf/10yearplan.pdf.
Full guidelines for funding proposals may be downloaded from www.thewaytocare.org/pdf/uwefchousingfund.pdf or you may call Judith Sklarz at 203-339-3352 for a copy.

The mission of United Way of Eastern Fairfield County is to mobilize the caring power of our community. To do this, United Way collaborates with other community partners to focus on the underlying causes of our region’s most serious needs and to identify our best opportunities for change; to raise charitable dollars and invest for measurable results that improve lives and build stronger communities; and to champion civic engagement by providing charitable giving and volunteer opportunities.

United Way’s strategic community investments are directed to four impact areas for changing conditions that will improve lives across the region of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull. They are Success by 6®, Operation Graduation, Destination Home, and Supporting A Caring Community. Each initiative has specific goals, and all United Way investments focus on achieving those goals. Together these initiatives describe a comprehensive, aligned framework to guide United Way priorities and to meet the challenges posed by the findings of Community Compass—that our region’s greatest needs are improvement in educational outcomes and the provision of affordable housing. This grant opportunity, targeting an affordable rental housing goal, is one of several strategies United Way is engaged in during this fiscal year.
