AREA SCHOOL CHILDREN TO DESIGN UNITED WAY'S 2003 DAY OF CARING LOGO

BRIDGEPORT, CT - (April 8, 2003) Wondering how area children can participate in the 2003 Day of Caring? United Way of Eastern Fairfield County is calling on all students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade in Bridgeport, Stratford, Trumbull, Easton, Monroe and Fairfield to contribute ideas for the 2003 Day of Caring logo competition.

This year's Day of Caring, set for Sept. 18, is a day-long event involving thousands of volunteers who pitch in individually or in teams to help community groups and nonprofit organizations with service projects.

The winning logo design and its creator(s) will be introduced at the May 13 United Way Campaign Kickoff at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard during a Bridgeport Bluefish game. The finalist's design will appear on all printed media related to the annual service day, including a limited edition 2003 Day of caring t-shirt. Each of three semi-finalists will also earn a gift card for their school, redeemable for equipment and/or supplies for each respective school's Day of Caring campus project.

United Way's Day of Caring Chairman, Dan Carney of Lamar Outdoor Advertising, thinks the logo contest is a great way to build excitement for the Day of Caring during its planning stages.
"Won't it be wonderful for a young person to see their creative design on the shirts being worn by thousands of volunteers who have set aside a day to help their community and the agencies that serve them?" asked Carney. "Our United Way has had such fantastic response from schools when we've gone out recruiting volunteer teams for past Days of Caring, that we wanted to give all the K through 8 students in our communities the chance to play an even greater role in the event."

In recent days, letters outlining the 2003 Day of Caring logo competition were sent to Superintendents' offices across the UWEFC's six-town service region.

Any student, group, or class within those communities whose school has registered for the competition is eligible. Entries should be designed with multi-purpose functionality, as they will be used on materials ranging from postcards, to t-shirts to billboards provided by Lamar Outdoor Advertising promoting the 2003 Day of Caring.

Any public or private school in Bridgeport, Stratford, Trumbull, Easton, Monroe and Fairfield is eligible to participate as long as entries are created by students in K- 8th Grade. Administrators who would like their school represented should contact their Superintendent's office, call 203-334-5106 ext. 310, or check the local United Way website at www.thewaytocare.org for printable copies of the competition registration form and fact sheet.

Deadline for competition entries is April 30, 2003. Entries will be judged by a panel of United Way volunteers.

United Way focuses on what matters, and builds stronger communities by supporting nearly 80 health and human service programs that helped more than 180,000 people last year. United Way funded programs are involved in a range of critical services serving the six towns of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull.
