What is Success By 6®?

The mission of United Way’s Success By 6® is to ensure that every child reaches school ready to learn. This early childhood initiative is part of the nation’s largest network of community-based coalitions to improve school readiness through community change. For the past sixteen years, 350 coalitions in 35 states have been changing the way things are done both locally and at the state level so that young children of all economic levels engage regularly in enriching learning experiences both at home and in early care and education settings.

Our approach is simple – convene the community; involve parents; galvanize business leaders; educate elected officials and ensure that everyone is aware of their role in helping our children succeed. The Success By 6® Advisory Council, community partners and staff initiate, implement, oversee and evaluate undertakings dedicated to accomplishing this mission. These include early literacy training, parent workshops, books for children and other measures that support successful early childhood development.

Success By 6® embraces research, which indicates that the first six years of life have a direct impact on lifelong achievement. Scientific data demonstrate the significance of early brain development, the importance of parental engagement from birth and the necessity for quality childhood educational experiences. These key ingredients contribute to a child’s future success in both school and later life. In fact, children are Born Learning. "You have one chance.
You either do it by the time the child reaches five and a half or six, or you don't. Those who are ready have a distinct advantage, a brighter future. ...If a child doesn't have an opportunity to be fed excitement about what learning is all about, then we've failed."

Frank Murkowski
