How We Work
No single group can address the complex problems that matter most. That is why United Way works closely with neighborhood
organizations and community leaders to
• identify and assess the needs of
local communities;
• find solutions to address those needs
and generate necessary resources;
• bring together nonprofit agencies,
government, foundations and volunteers
to implement solutions;
• set goals and measure results every
step of the way.
Our Focus
United Way of Eastern Fairfield County’s approach targets the underlying causes of
problems in four key Impact Areas:
Success By 6® - So that every child reaches school ready
to learn.
Operation Graduation - Because our young people need a diploma to compete in today’s global economy.
Destination Home - At the end of the day, everyone needs a place to call home.
Supporting A Caring Community - Together we help our
neighbors in need.
The Need for Change
• 26% of Eastern Fairfield County residents live in poverty.
• The cumulative drop out rate for Bridgeport’s class of 2003
was 35%.
• 1,700 Eastern Fairfield County residents have no place to call home tonight.
We are working to change these facts. United Way’s impact goes well beyond the numbers. What matters most are the lives we change and the communities we strengthen by working together.
What We Do
Today’s United Way focuses on addressing the underlying causes of community issues - why problems exist. United Way programs are not just “stop gap” measures but ultimately preventative ones that create real and lasting change.
United Way understands that social issues are not limited to any one town or to any one family -- they are everywhere. That is why United Way works across our region to build healthy communities, large and small.
