Bigelow Teas, located in Fairfield, CT partnered with United Way of Eastern Fairfield County on a project  to promote literacy and to draw attention to the positive outcomes of the simple activity of reading to a child. The folder, pictured above, contains a Bigelow Tea bag and some words of wisdom. The folder urges the recipient to savor the moment of relaxing with a cup of Bigelow Teas while reading a good book to a curious child. The folder also references United Way's Success By 6® website, where you can learn more about this initiative to ensure that every child enters school ready to learn. Both Bigelow Teas and United Way are distributing the teabags at events throughout our six-town region.

Success By 6 ® Update: November 29, 2006

The Bridgeport Alliance for Young Children, the group overseeing the implementation of Bridgeport’s Blueprint for Young Children, met on November 29. A committee has been formed for e ach of the five goals in the Blueprint.

Overview of Goal Groups – each has the following tasks:

  1. To elect three co-chairs – the BAYC group agreed that each Goal group should designate two professionals and one parent to serve as co-chairs
  2. To review and prioritize Blueprint strategies and action steps within each Goal
  3. To develop a work plan for 2007
  4. To specify measurable benchmarks – what changes can be measured by our actions?

Goal Group Presentations

Goal 1 (Presenter: Michael Golrick)

  • Co-chairs have been elected: Carmen Rodriguez, Stanley Bernard, and Jean V. Smith (a parent)
  • The Family Resource Network expanded to “house” Goal 1 – meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at United Way.
  • Work to date: Goal 1 is in the process of reviewing and prioritizing its strategies. Members were asked to complete a questionnaire which will assign values (according to levels of both urgency and importance) to the priority of each strategy’s action steps, and will determine what agencies are working on each action step.
  • Michael and Jordana have created a website for BAYC. Go to: http://bayc.blogspot.com for important BAYC information about meetings and work to date!
  • The next Goal 1 meeting will be held on December 7, 2006 from 12:30-2:00 pm at United Way.
  • Jordana Willers is the BAYC staff person for Goal 1. Contact her at (203) 248-0520 or jordanawillers@yahoo.com.

"You have one chance.
You either do it by the time the child reaches five and a half or six, or you don't. Those who are ready have a distinct advantage, a brighter future. ...If a child doesn't have an opportunity to be fed excitement about what learning is all about, then we've failed."
