Brief History: Today The Royal Bank of Scotland Group's importance in the banking sector is firmly reflected in its long and distinctive history. The Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in Edinburgh, by royal charter, in 1727. It opened its first branch in Glasgow in 1783 and developed a large network of offices throughout Scotland during the nineteenth century. In 1874 it opened a branch office in London and from the 1920s developed, by acquisition, a major presence in England. By 1970, following the Royal Bank's merger with the Edinburgh-based National Commercial Bank of Scotland, comprising the former National Bank of Scotland (established 1825) and Commercial Bank of Scotland (established 1810), it enjoyed over forty per cent of Scotland's banking business. Under the Williams & Glyn's Bank banner, it also boasted a large and growing presence in England and Wales. In 1985 Williams & Glyn's merged fully with the Group's Scottish clearing bank which thereafter traded throughout Britain as a single entity, The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Community Reinvestment Activity: RBS National Bank has responsibilities under the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), which encourages financial institutions to help meet the needs of low- and moderate-income communities. RBS National Bank gives priority consideration to programs that promote affordable housing, encourage community-based services to low- and moderate-income families and individuals, support community development activities that are catalysts for economically distressed areas and promote new ways to address economic self-sufficiency.

Ruth G. Price , Vice President, was selected for the Norman Leeds Award for her outstanding work bringing RBS NB into the United Way’s exclusive Chairman’s Circle .

RBS National Bank’s United Way of Eastern Fairfield County Campaign: RBS National Bank’s goal for the 2005 campaign was to create early awareness of the positive impact that the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County makes in the community. With the full support of then CEO/President Dennis Jones and current CEO/President Joe Hoffman, and other management staff, the campaign began with great energy. In addition, RBS NB partnered with the United Way to create a series of Q’s and A’s devoted to issues of homelessness, Success By 6® and other programs, posted on its Intranet every week well before the campaign was underway. This process served to educate RBS NB’s colleagues, so that when they participated in the campaign, they did so with greater understanding of the outcomes of their contributions.

RBS National Bank employees were quite eager to participate in various initiatives through different channels to raise funds even beyond the traditional campaign. The enthusiastic participation in “Blue Jeans Friday,” silent auction, bake sales, its theater group and book fairs made these events overwhelmingly successful. RBS National Bank’s generous corporate contribution also assisted in attaining their goal to be in the Chairman’s Circle in 2005 along with other noted corporations in Fairfield County.
