Alexis deTocqueville Society
In Memoriam – Jack Hampford,
Hampford Research, Inc.

Jack Hampford, Founder and Chairman of Hampford Research, Inc. in Stratford, CT, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2007. Jack was a long-time supporter of United Way of Eastern Fairfield County, and his deTocqueville gift each year helped United Way accomplish our mission to build a stronger Eastern Fairfield County by mobilizing the community to improve people’s lives. His leadership in his company and for United Way energized and inspired people to make a difference.

Jack was a Trumbull resident for 39 years and a dedicated Alumni Fellow of Penn State University. When not leading a successful and growing company and having an impact in the community, his love, aside from his family, was golf and he traveled the world to play. He was a member of Brooklawn Country Club for 30 years. His other passion was vintage cars of which he was a collector.

He was honored for his community work as a Golden Tee recipient at the Cardinal Shehan Center, where he was a former Board Member. He was a member of the Founder’s Club at Manhattanville College and a longtime supporter of the Mercy Learning Center and the Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA. He was a member of SOCMA (Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association), and past president of the Connecticut Rubber Group.

Born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania he was a graduate of Pottsville High School Class of 1950 and a two time state champion gymnast. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University Class of 1954 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He continued to compete in gymnastics while at Penn State and was invited to participate in the 1952 Olympic Trials.

Jack passed along his desire to help others and make a difference to Kate Donahue, John E. Hampford, Anne Hampford, Martin Hampford and Tim Hampford. He is also survived by many loving grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His legacy at Hampford Research, Inc. is continued through his daughter Kate Donahue, who is now President.
