GE’s United Way Campaign

GE volunteers helped build houses for Bridgeport families during the 2005 GE United Way Campaign. This group stands in front of a home for Maurico and Ilsia Guzman and their three children.

The two-week Habitat for Humanity project in October 2005 kicked off the best GE United Way campaign ever -- more money was raised, more money was matched by the GE Foundation, more employees decided to be one percent givers and more volunteers worked on Habitat homes than in any previous campaign. Thanks to many dedicated and hard-working GE volunteers, two happy families are living in their new homes on Jane Street in Bridgeport. The Habitat project organizers coordinated the efforts of 600 volunteers and, on one day, kept 90 people busy. Donations designated by GE employees for the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County will support housing solutions that prevent homelessness and help develop regional solutions for the housing crisis and more.

In addition to employee pledges, $59,000 was raised during special campaign events. Two silent auctions, one in the cafeteria at Corporate Headquarters and the other online, gave employees a chance to bid on many items -- lunch with CEO Jeff Immelt, golf in Ireland, Yankee tickets, iPods, restaurant gift certificates, children’s birthday parties, wine, Thanksgiving dinner and more. Raffle tickets for a new Vespa, sold during lunch, created campaign buzz.

Gus Serra, Manager, Communications & Community Relations, and Pam Daley, Executive Chair, 2005 GE United Way Campaign, Senior Vice President-Corporate Business Development, welcomed the GE volunteers who completed two GE Habitat houses and worked at three other Habitat sites.

Campaign co-chairs Mike McAlevey, Chief Corporate and Securities Counsel, and Eileen Cavanaugh, Manager-Corporate Operations and Controllership, joined Cesar and Nancy Flores at the dedication of their new home in Bridgeport.
