For the 15th anniversary of the annual Day of Caring, United Way mobilized the greater Bridgeport community to support our children. To mark this milestone, United Way put traditional Day of Caring activities, such as planting, painting and building, on hold to focus on our Success By 6® and Operation Graduation initiatives -- continuing the collective journey to help close the achievement gap for students in the greater Bridgeport region. At the November 1, 2006 event, which took place at the University of Bridgeport’s Bernhard Center, Coach Herman Boone of Remember the Titans fame and former NBA star Charles D. Smith, Jr. inspired the crowd with their heartfelt stories. In addition, local nonprofit organizations introduced participants to 15 ways that they could positively impact the life of a child. Many of the participants completed Commitment Cards – volunteering a specific number of hours to benefit our community’s children over the next twelve months. United Way is grateful to the sponsors who helped make this special Day of Caring a success.
